Marmitte dei Giganti

marmitte2.jpg (44244 byte)The variety of the landscape surrounding Sarsina reflects on one hand the intense and secular action of the man, on the other hand proposes wide wild areas covered with woods where you can find different species of trees: maples, manna-ashes, Turkey oaks, ashes, hornbeams, chestnuts, beeches, durmasts and many shrubs such as cornels, hawthorns, hazels and bushes of juniper and genista.

The natural park "Marmitte dei Giganti" is situated exactly in this habitat, on the west of Sarsina, where the vortical flowing of the Crocetta stream and of the Molinello ditch moulds in sandstone unusual forms of rare beauty.

This erosion phenomenon is unique in Romagna: it originates, along two parallel streams with a steep slope, various, roughly cylindrical cavities, with an almost vertical axis and a conical bottom with smooth and a-few-metres-deep walls. In particular, along the Molinello ditch, the whirling motion of the torrential waters, rich in solid materials, created an original entrance gallery to the last pothole with a play of water and squirts which still goes on in rainy days.

The entrances to the "Marmitte dei Giganti" are 500 m. far from the town, in the direction of Bagno di Romagna.

An informative panel, at the end of the big bridge, indicates the pathway, immediately on the right, to the pothole of the Crocetta stream- the area is equipped for picnics- and the pothole of the Molinello ditch, 100 m. further on, on the left.
