Built around the year 1000, it is considered one of the most valuable examples of Romanesque style in Romagna. The front is simple and elegant while the inside, after the restoration works made in the 60s, is imposing and austere. Worth visiting: the excellent ambo (XII century) in the presbitery with the symbols of the four Evangelists; the marble bas-relief (dating back to the X century) at the foot of the high altar with Christ between tha Archangels Michael and Gabriel; the font, at the end of the left hand nave, composed by a late-roman, lustral basin. The church is the final destination of pilgrimages and visits to obtain the blessing with the "catena di san Vicinio" (a iron neckchain connected, by a millenary tradition to the Saint). For centuries, the "Chain" has been offered the kiss of the faithful or closed around the necks of the ill and possessed so they may be blessed and protected against the Devil. Only a few priests are allowed to practice this rite. Further info on the Cathedral and the devotion to Saint Vicinius can be found on the web site of the Sanctuary. |
